We've had heaps of questions about what we would recommend to do whilst in NZ - so we thought we would post some suggestions on our blog to help you out with your travel plans
If you are spending 2 weeks in NZ, this is what we think would be fun:
Go north from Christchurch and visit Hamner Springs (hot pools with varying temperatures where you can sit back and relax; Jiwi broke her nose here
whilst diving into the only pool that you can dip your head under. Though this was many moons ago…
Kick on through to Kaikoura where you can see seals and whales and enjoy some 'fush and chups' by the sea (trying to help out here on your own Kiwi accent). When driving, keep an eye on the sea-side of the road. You can often see seals sunning themselves on the rocks. You can stop the car and take a closer look too. Also you can buy fresh crayfish (aka lobster) from stalls on the side of the road… yummy
Head further north to Marlborough and true wine country. Heaps of fabulous places to sample both good food and wine such as Cloudy Bay including their fabulous Pelorous bubbles and spectacula Sauvignon Blancs. Though, allow a lot of time as there are so many wineries to see that there really doesn't seem to be enough day time
Following the wineries, head to Nelson where beaches, wine and art epitomise the life here. It is also the gateway to the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park – this is where Danga & Jiwi went sea kayaking and were lucky enough to paddle alongside dolphins and killer (orca) whales.
From Nelson, head south via the West Coast (lush and green rainforest country). Highlights are Punakaiki (the pancake rocks) and the Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers – this is where Danga & Jiwi took a helicopter flight up the glacier and did some glacial ice hiking which included the use of crampons and stabilising sticks. Lots of fun – but don't forget to bring your sunnies – it can get very bright on the ice.
From the glaciers, drive through the Haast Pass into Wanaka and the golden Cardona Valley before heading to Queenstown.
We suggest a side trip from Queenstown further south to visit the unspoilt beauty of Fiordland National Park including Milford and Doubtful Sounds and Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri.
On your return journey to Christchurch, travel through the Lindis Pass, MacKenzie Country and Canterbury Plains to experience spectacular glacier lakes and Aoraki Mt Cook.
If you don't have that much time or you are arriving/leaving from a different destination than Christchurch, then any one of the above locations/iterations will be enjoyable, depending on your time constraints. More information and some suggested travel itineraries can be found at the NZ travel site or the Automobile Association.
Happy planning
